- Glidis, o Jeff! I'm working with the same online sources you are (not that I've gotten very far). Printed sources seem very hard to come by. The large library where I work has Arie de Jong's dictionary and some grammars in its catalog, but when I requested them, all that I received was a report that they were not on the shelf! At any rate, as far I can determine, the grammar has remained stable since de Jong's reforms. A few new pronouns he introduced have been dropped, but that seems to be it. In my opinion, vocabulary is a bit of a problem. There are a few dictionaries online, but they don't seem comprehensive. Of course, many words can be formed from the roots, prefixes, and suffixes, but I am not sure that we have a complete list of those either, and there still would be a lot of gaps in such areas as the names of countr
ies and (as you mentioned) new inventions. I haven't yet tried sending an e-mail message to Ralph Midgley of the Flenef Bevünetik Volapüka. He may be able to answer some of our questions. If you get in touch with him, let me know.--Flauto Dolce 02:17, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Glidis! I've begun working through the Volapük Vifik lessons as well as looking over the Volapük Introduction and the old Handbook of Volapük. I find I can read the language a little more easily now. Good job on those articles; I understood them perfectly! Actually, I think "möleküls panemöl," in your earlier version, was better than "mölekülis panemöl," since it is the subject of that passive participle. Do you agree?
Following your example, I joined the Volapükalised; approval came pretty quickly. One of the files available for download is a rather large V-E dictionary. Because some of the definitions are in German, I suspect it has its origins in the de Jong dictionary. It doesn't include many names of the chemical elements, so your article listing those will be a real help.
Perhaps we could also think about removing some of the non-encyclopedic material (e.g., text of The Pearl of Great Price, dictionary entries already present in the Volapük index pages of Wiktionary). But first I'll try to add something new.

- I agree entirely. Let's give only the "reformed" Volapük forms in the interlanguage links on the main page. If we eventually have articles on the languages themselves, we can give the old forms as redirects. Some good news: I tried again today at work to send for the de Jong Volapük-German dictionary, and this time it turned up! It includes proper nouns and adjectives, so I'll see whether it lists languages other than those you found in the grammar.
- I've looked over briefly the guidelines for starting a new language Wikipedia. We're already at step 2. I wonder whether it would be good to make the main page look more like those of the English-language Wikipedia and many others. If I try fiddling around with it, I'll do it as a test page so that the original version isn't lost. Perhaps we should seek sysop status on vo:, so that we can delete pages, etc. Right now it appears that there are none, so if we find the person to ask, there should be no objections. I'm not an administrator on en: either and haven't sought to be, but I have done plenty of editing there; perhaps that experience would count here.
- By the way, I put in a request for membership in the Grup Vödasbuka Volapükik the other day, but haven't yet received a reply. It seems a less active list than the other one, so perhaps the moderator doesn't look at messages too regularly either!

Glidis! Great work on Füsüd! I've been working on a Volapük version of the English Wikipedia's main page. It's still in progress; let me know what you think of it! What I haven't found in the de Jong dictionary or the various files online (including the large text file available from the Yahoo Volapük group) I've done my best to form from existing roots and affixes (though I'm not at all satisfied with "Nünömaprogramemakaenalav" for "Software engineering"). Incidentally, from the messages I have read on the Yahoo group, it looks as if no one there is particularly interested in the Wikipedia project.
The copy of the Wörterbuch at the Library of Congress seems never to have been used. It is in perfect condition! Strangely, LC apparently never had a copy of the Gramat; it bought the NYPL's microfilm, which was probably made from the very item you photocopied. Does that have a comprehensive list of prefixes and suffixes? I've been having to gather those (and their meanings) from a variety of sources.
I haven't looked into sysop status yet, but will do so soon.

- Thank you for the praise! Yes, I agree that -ös would be better than -öd. I'll change that as I go along. I've also thought about trying to add the sort of "About this page" English-language link that is familiar to you from the Interlingua main page, and to me from the Esperanto one.
- The dictionary doesn't include prefixes and suffixes, so I really appreciate the lists you have provided. Quite a few things I had run across in the dictionary make better sense to me now. I didn't find the explanations in Volapük Introduction of the various suffixes for verbal nouns particularly helpful; perhaps as we continue examining the vocabulary of the language, the distinctions will become apparent.

I requested administrator status yesterday on Intlwiki-L and was given it today! I've just tried out my new powers by editing a MediaWiki message ("De Vükiped, sikloped libik") and deleting a page created by an anonymous user in Polish. It seems I'm also a "bureaucrat," which means I can confer administrator status on other users of vo: as needed. Let me know whether you'd like to be one!
I've done a little more work on the test version of a new main page. In addition, I've been thinking about deleting the pages with non-encyclopedic content (e.g., dictionary entries, stories), but won't act before consulting you.

- I hadn't thought about the copyright status of the stories, but now that you bring it up, I have found the "Introduction to Volapük" elsewhere on the Web with the notice: "(c) Ed. Robertson, February 1994." Perhaps permission can be obtained to use that; I'd hate to lose the useful information it contains. It is in Wiktionary as well, where it really doesn't belong. Perhaps the stories should go to Wikisource, but I don't really want to be the one to put them there. I think I saw them among the files available for download on one of the Yahoo Volapük groups, but I'm not sure. For the time being, I'll hold off on doing anything with them.

Glidis! Thanks for coming to the rescue of the vo.wiki I started it and promoted it on the Volapük List. But I had to give my attention to the other wikis, specially the Interlingua one which took off and has had a lot of traffic. I'm happy that you're serious about developing the vo.wiki. I'm sorry I wasn't able to devote more time to it. I did put up a lot of information on Volapük in the yahoogroups files section, word lists, dictionaries, grammars etc. You're welcome to these materials. The German dictionary and the Grammar are all scanned in now, also I put up all the Sirkuylapenayds online at http://www.geocities.com/sirkuylapenayd/
Since we moved on to the new software and the domain extension change I lost the admin access. So it's pretty messy in the vo.wiki and there's a need for a lot of housekeeping. If you can restore my admin access I'd appreciate it.
I've also put up some photos at the yahoogroups site which we could use in the vo.wiki, pictures of Schleyer, etc., it would be good to be able to document the history of the language and its conferences. What do you think? -- ILVI 27 February 2004

Volapük wiktionary redakön

I finally read your message on my page in the Volapük wiktionary, where I've been absent -- I spent most of my wiki-time this month working on city stubs for the Volapük Wikipedia, and did nothing in wiktionary -- sorry for the delay! Yes, it would be great if you wanted to help entering De Jong's Wörterbuch. Have you had a look at the templates, and how they work? What I am doing is basically entering every word from the Wörterbuch (I have an original), with the German translation and a few other details (morphemic analysis, related words, pronunciation, etc.). I'm at the end of letter B (I have entered a few scattered words beginning with other letters when I felt bored with B-words, but mostly I've done B-words). I'm now trying to come up with a python2.5 program that I could use as a bot to enter words faster -- it certainly is a repetitive task that could probably be mostly automated.
I'm not entering Cherpillod's dictionary, or even Ralph Midgley, for the following reason: I would like this to contain only de Jong's translations, from three sources only (the Wörterbuch, the Fövots -- those on the net, and also the remaining others, in the possession of Mr Caraco, who perhaps I'll be able to visit at some point --, and the lists with "Vöds Nulik" from the Volapükagased pro Nedänapükans). This preference is justified by Jong's translations being, let's say, canonical, since he was the authority on revised Volapük: all other translations -- Cherpillod's, Midgley's -- are derived from his, directly or indirectly. In the future, they may also be included in some way or another (I still don't know how exactly), but for the time being I feel that de Jong's translations are the primary source and deserve priority. --Smeira 12:20, 16 yunul 2007 (UTC)
