The first official flag of Seward was inaugurated on 12 December 2016. The new flag will be flown at four locations: in front of City Hall, the Harbor, Benny Benson Memorial Park, and within City Council chambers.

The flag, unveiled on 28 August (Seward Founder's Day) is based on Katelyn Correa’s original design, which was selected from over 350 local children entries.

The flag is horizontally divided blue-green by a broad white chevron and charged with a yellow star at upper fly. The flag represents steep mountains in summer and winter plumage. The star is a tribute to Benny Benson's Alaska state flag. Benny Benson (1913-1972), the designer of the flag of Alaska, lived from 1925 to 1932 at the Jesse Lee Home orphanage in Seward.

The previously used flag, made of the city logo on a white background, was widely used but never made official.
