Object history
Deutsch: Hessischer Löwe und Mainzer Rad kennzeichnen die Zugehörigkeit der Gemeinde: bis zur Säkularisation zum Erzbistum Mainz, danach zu Hessen. Der Bär spielt auf den Namen „Allendorf im Bärenschießen“ an, den die Gemeinde zur Unterscheidung von anderen Orten mit gleichem Namen führte. Das Wappen wurde auch nach der Eingliederung von umliegenden Gemeinden in die Stadt im Rahmen der Hessischen Gebietsreform beibehalten.
English: The bear in the arms is derived from the 18th century seal of the town. The town at the time was named Allendorf im Bärenschießen, and the seal displayed the bear as a canting element. The lion is representing the Landgraves of Hesse and was added in 1955 together with the wheel of Mainz, in order to remind on the former rulers. Stadtallendorf gained city rights in 1960.
