Notes The Muir portrait of Adam Smith is “so called after those who are known to have owned it.  …  We have no absolute confirmation, no positive actual proof, that the picture is of Adam Smith.  We have definitive evidence that one such portrait of him existed.  Beyond this, the most we should say is that the Muir portrait makes out quote the best claim to being an authentic portrait of Adam Smith, though, in the absence of positive confirmation, the evidence in its favour must be circumstantial.  Even so, that evidence is strong; and no other claimant has appeared with a comparable case” (A. L. Macfie, 1952).[1]
