A fundação do convento de Santa Clara em Vila do Conde, data de 1318 por iniciativa do filho ilegítimo de D. Dinis, D. Afonso Sanches e sua esposa D. Teresa Martins, com a finalidade de recolher filhas da nobreza mais pobre.

Cerca do ano de 1780, são feitas obras de alargamento, nomeadamente dos dormitórios que já não comportavam o número de freiras que tinha o convento, obras que só terminariam em 1825, mas não completaram o projecto inicial. Com a extinção das ordens religiosas, em 1834, o convento foi ficando abandonado, até que em por volta de 1900, é criada neste edifício a Casa de Detenção e Correcção do Porto, mais tarde, Reformatório de Vila do Conde, e o convento é entregue ao Ministério da Justiça. Em 1944, depois de obras de adaptação do edifício, o reformatório foi entregue ao Instituto Salesiano, passando a designar-se, Escola Profissional de Santa Clara, onde os jovens teriam ensino profissional dos cursos industriais de sapateiros, alfaiates, marceneiros e encadernadores. <a href="https://www.guiadacidade.pt/pt/poi-convento-de-santa-clara-15666" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.guiadacidade.pt/pt/poi-convento-de-santa-clara-15666</a>
